I believe that only one person could have composed this music, so complex and interrelated and yet flowing naturally and emotionally satisfying. And for him, it was all in a week’s work— he was obligated by contract to produce a cantata for the Sunday service.
Of course he believed deeply in a divine presence. How else could he account for the music that flowed from within him?
Ah! If only I could be sucessful, o Highest,
in bringing You a worthy song of gratitude!
Yet, should the skill be lacking in me in this,
I will still tell, Lord, of Your glory.
