The still, small voice

God speaks to us, let there be no doubt, whispers in our ears and plants visions in our brains.  At those turning points in the course of history and in our own lives, whose importance is perfectly clear a year or a generation after the fact, but which may seem at the time just a distraction from our routine…

God whispers in our ears, but so do a thousand other voices, supplicants and plaintive martyrs, calls to virtue and to heroic folly, self-importance and self-indulgence…

How are we to know the voice of God?

This is the heart of meditation and the promise immanent in that ancient maxim,
γνῶθι σεαυτόν.
