Mary Midgley

Cognition cannot be translated into circuitry. Learning and creativeness cannot be defined as specific portions of the cognitive machinery.

Mary Midgley is 97 years old, still fighting for scientific humility and the rights of animals, still reminding us to be amazed, and not mistake our world for a pinball machine.


An update to John Donne:  “It is unthinkable that any species should be an island.”

Hubris calls for nemesis, and in one form or another it’s going to get it, not as a punishment from outside but as the completion of a pattern already started.
