Drugs for Neglected Diseases

Pharmaceutical companies are drawn to develop drugs that can be most profitably marketed.  Diseases that affect huge numbers of people in the Third World or small numbers of people in the First World don’t make the cut.

The Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative has taken on the challenge of drug development at a fraction the cost of Big Pharma, and is targeting diseases based on their human impact, not their profitability.  They’re succeeding, with new drugs for malaria, leishmoniasis, sleeping sickness, and Chagas’ disease.
