In the Shadow of Beethoven

Is it an accident that from Beethoven’s birth in 1770 to Schubert in 1797, there were no composers of note in all Europe?

Franz Berwald was born 23 July 1796 in Stockholm.  Sweden was and is a hard place to be a composer.  He made a living as a glassblower when he was not running a sawmill, and was able to find performances for his symphonies, tone poems, choral and chamber works only in the last year of his life.

Listen to his Sinfonie singulière and you be the judge.
Here is the Fantasy on Norwegian Themes.
