Encomia to chutzpah

“Always do what you are afraid to do.”

“We but half express ourselves, and are ashamed of that divine idea which each of us represents.”

“Whoso would be a man, must be a nonconformist. He who would gather immortal palms must not be hindered by the name of goodness, but must explore if it be goodness. Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson, whose birthday is today.

“The surest defense against Evil is extreme individualism, originality of thinking, whimsicality, even—if you will—eccentricity.”
— Joseph Brodsky, whose birthday was yesterday.

I subscribe to this advice, but I would add that those who take it have to be prepared to be wrong most of the time, and keep enough perspective and openness to change course. – JJM
